Sweet Strawberry Shortcake Puppy Chow Recipe Easy Crunchy Snack Mix

  • Author: Nora Winslow
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Description

A sweet, crunchy, and addictive snack mix inspired by strawberry shortcake, made with cereals, white chocolate, and freeze-dried strawberries. Perfect for quick snacks, parties, and picnics.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups Rice Chex Cereal (about 180g)
  • 3 cups Strawberry Cereal (like Strawberry Cheerios or Fruity Pebbles) (about 90g)
  • 1 ½ cups White Chocolate Chips (270g)
  • ½ cup Freeze-Dried Strawberries (15g) (optional but recommended)
  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar (120g)
  • 4 tablespoons Butter (60g)
  • 1 teaspoon Strawberry Extract
  • ½ teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • Pinch of Salt

Instructions

  1. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Measure out Rice Chex and strawberry cereal, and set aside. Have freeze-dried strawberries ready if using.
  2. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine white chocolate chips and butter. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring well each time, until smooth and glossy.
  3. Stir in strawberry extract, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt into the melted chocolate mixture.
  4. Pour both cereals into a large mixing bowl. Drizzle the melted chocolate mixture over the cereals.
  5. Use a wooden spoon or silicone spatula to gently fold everything together, coating every piece without breaking the cereal.
  6. Sprinkle freeze-dried strawberries over the mix and fold in gently (optional).
  7. Transfer the coated cereal mix into a large resealable plastic bag or bowl. Add powdered sugar, seal or cover, and shake or toss until evenly dusted.
  8. Spread the puppy chow out on the prepared baking sheet to cool and set for about 15 minutes before serving or storing.

Notes

[‘Use freeze-dried strawberries for best crunch and flavor; fresh strawberries will make the mix soggy.’, ‘If white chocolate mixture thickens before coating all cereal, microwave for 10 seconds and stir to loosen.’, ‘Shake powdered sugar in a bag for even coating and less mess.’, ‘Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days to maintain crunch.’, ‘If mix softens, warm in a 250°F (120°C) oven for 5 minutes to crisp up.’, ‘For vegan version, use dairy-free white chocolate and vegan butter substitutes.’, ‘Add mix-ins like mini marshmallows or nuts after coating and before powdered sugar step.’, ‘If coating feels sticky, dust lightly with cornstarch mixed with powdered sugar.’]
