Homemade Spiced Christmas Jam

  • Author: Nora Winslow
  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: 6 cups of jam 1x

Description

A festive jam packed with holiday flavors like cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger, perfect for gifting or adding to your holiday breakfast spread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups fresh cranberries (400g)
  • 2 medium oranges (zest and juice)
  • 4 cups granulated sugar (800g)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 cup water (240ml)
  • 1 packet pectin (85g)

Instructions

  1. Wash the cranberries and zest the oranges. Juice the oranges and set aside the zest and juice.
  2. In a large pot, combine cranberries, orange juice, water, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, and ginger. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce to a simmer. Stir occasionally and cook until the cranberries burst and start to break down (about 15 minutes).
  3. Stir in the sugar and pectin. Return the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly to dissolve the sugar. Boil hard for 1-2 minutes until it thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon. Remove the cinnamon sticks.
  4. To check if the jam is ready, spoon a small amount onto a cold plate and let it cool for 1 minute. Run your finger through the jam—it should wrinkle and hold its shape. If not, boil for another minute and test again.
  5. Carefully ladle the hot jam into clean jars, leaving about 1/4 inch of space at the top. Wipe the rims clean, seal with lids, and let cool completely. If canning, process the jars in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes to seal them.

Notes

[‘Don’t skip the orange zest—it adds incredible flavor.’, ‘Use fresh spices for the best results.’, ‘Let the cranberries break down fully before adding sugar and pectin.’, ‘The jam thickens as it cools, so don’t worry if it seems runny initially.’, ‘Label jars for gifting with the name and date.’]
