Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or a dairy-free alternative)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon black food coloring
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • Milk (as needed for frosting spreadability)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour your cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder, 2 cups of granulated sugar, 1 ½ teaspoons of baking powder, 1 ½ teaspoons of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Mix well.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together 2 large eggs, 1 cup of vegetable oil, 1 cup of buttermilk (or a dairy-free alternative), 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, and 1 tablespoon of black food coloring. Mix until smooth.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture, stirring until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay!
  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Once baked, remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer them to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  7. Meanwhile, prepare your frosting by beating 1 cup of unsalted butter until creamy. Gradually add 4 cups of powdered sugar and 1/4 cup of cocoa powder, mixing until fluffy. Add milk as needed for spreadability.
  8. Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a plate or cake stand. Spread a generous amount of frosting on top. Add the second layer and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  9. Decorate your cake with spooky-themed decorations, like edible ghosts or creepy sprinkles. Let your creativity shine!

Notes

Consider making the cake a day in advance to allow flavors to meld together beautifully.
